Fishing vessel crossing the Greymouth bar in rough seas — waves crashing, masts cutting through the swell

WESTCOAST RIPPERS

BARS. BOATS. BIG SWELLS. WEST COAST.

Documenting the Greymouth bar — one of New Zealand's most unpredictable stretches of water.

WESTCOAST
RIPPERS

Based out of Greymouth on the West Coast of New Zealand, Westcoast Rippers documents the Greymouth bar — one of the most demanding harbour entrances in the country. Fishing boats, big swells, unpredictable conditions and the skill it takes to get through in one piece.

The channel captures real bar crossings as they happen: calm days, rough days and everything in between. No commentary needed — the water does the talking. Just a camera, the bar, and whatever the Tasman throws at it.

The West Coast runs on fishing and the sea. The bar is part of life out here. That's what the channel is about.

WHERE THE
RIVER MEETS THE SEA

The Greymouth bar is where the Grey River hits the Tasman. Sand, swell and current — always shifting, never the same twice. Every crossing is on its own terms.

THE SWELL

The Tasman doesn't give much warning. Bar conditions can change fast — what's manageable in the morning can be dangerous by noon.

THE BOATS

Working fishing vessels — built for it. These aren't pleasure craft. They cross the bar because that's the job.

THE CROSSING

Reading the bar, picking your moment and committing. There's no reversing a crossing once you're in it.

ON CAMERA

Shot from the breakwater, the beach, the boat — wherever the action is. Raw footage, real conditions, no staging.
